Heartland Consumers Power District has opened at its new headquarters building in the Lakeview Industrial Park on the south edge of Madison.
Last Friday, Heartland staff transferred items from the old building and opened for business on Tuesday in the new location at 432 S.E. 12th Street.
Construction workers can still be seen at Heartland, performing some finishing touches. However, all office spaces are complete and staff members are able to perform their daily tasks.
The 9,400-square-foot facility is expected to be South Dakota's first LEED Certified Platinum building. Design plans were submitted to the U.S. Green Building Council and official word on certification will come this spring.
Designed by Koch Hazard Architects, the Heartland facility features sustainable site development, the use of recycled and reused materials, as well as water and energy efficiency. At least 35 percent of the building's power will be Green-E certified, supplied in part by the Wessington Springs Wind Farm and on-site, roof-mounted solar panels.
Heartland will hold an open house and grand opening in the spring after all work is complete.
Heartland is a public power utility created in 1969 by the state of South Dakota. Based in Madison, Heartland provides low-cost, reliable power, energy services and community development programs to communities and state agencies in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa.
