Koch Hazard Celebrates 50th Year with Why Why Architecture Matters Walking Tour

Koch Hazard Architects is celebrating its 50th year in 2011-12 and kicked-off the celebration on Wednesday night with the Why Architecture Matters Walking Tour in downtown Sioux Falls. Architect Stacey McMahan and Project Designer Angela McKillip led community members on a four-building tour, highlighting the projects history and special features. Overall, Koch Hazard has selected fifteen downtown building to showcase how big ideas, passion and architecture have shaped downtown Sioux Falls.

South Dakota Department of Game Fish and Parks

The South Dakota Department of Game Fish and Parks has received word that the new addition to their Missouri River Fisheries Building has earned LEED Silver certification from the United States Green Building Council. The new addition incorporated native landscaping, low or no-VOC products, and natural daylighting strategies into its design to earn a total of 34 points.

SDSU Dykhouse earns LEED Gold certification

SDSU has received word from the United States Green Building Council that their new athletic facility, the Dykhouse Student Athlete Center, has earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.

 
 

 

Koch Hazard receives design awards

Of the five awards to be presented at the 2010 American Institute of Architects (AIA) South Dakota convention, Koch Hazard will receive three. Heartland Consumers Power District Headquarters in Madison, SD received an Honor Award, while Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and Sammons Financial Group, both in Sioux Falls, will each take home a Merit Award.

Stacey McMahan selected to lead green rebuilding efforts in Haiti

Stacey McMahan, principal at Koch Hazard Architects, was selected by the American Institute of Architects and Architecture for Humanity to head sustainable rebuilding efforts in Haiti. McMahan will work directly with community members on the ground in Architecture for Humanity’s Rebuilding Center based in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Longfellow Elementary nearing completion in Mitchell

Construction is nearing completion on Longfellow Elementary School in Mitchell, SD. This new 62,575 square foot two-level building replaces the existing school on the same city block.

Tea Area Intermediate School ready for 2010 school year

Construction is now complete on the new 68,000 square foot Tea Intermediate School. The $7.4 million building serves grades 4-6 in the rapidly growing Tea Area school district.

Dakota Valley's Nylen Science Center nears completion

An innovative new middle school science center addition designed by Koch Hazard Architects for the Dakota Valley School District in North Sioux City is nearing completion. The 11,000 square foot addition was designed to increase the focus on science instruction and learning, and create an atmosphere of wonder and a desire to research and be more inquisitive about science.

Construction nearly complete on Beresford Schools' new wrestling facility

Bids were under budget this past spring on the new 7,350 square foot wrestling facility at Beresford Schools. Construction is scheduled to be complete in August.

Groundbreaking ceremony held for Hills-Beaver Creek

On Saturday, June 12, construction officially began on the new high school/middle school in Hills, MN. Koch Hazard designed this 76,765 square foot building to replace the existing, allowing for the addition of a future elementary school.

Sioux Falls Coliseum Restoration Complete

Koch Hazard's restoration of the historic Sioux Falls Coliseum facade is now complete following a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday, June 24. "...the majority of the work was done from old photos and I'm just amazed at their abilities to get that done," said Mary Dean Janklow, president of the Coliseum Exterior Restoratio Committee.

Construction begins on Brookings High School Expansion and Renovation

Construction officially began on the Brookings High School campus following an April 21 groundbreaking ceremony. Koch Hazard designed the expansion and renovation which is scheduled to be completed August 2011.

SDSU Dykhouse Student Athlete Center celebrates grand opening

On April 24, South Dakota State University will celebrate the grand opening of their new facility, the Dykhouse Student Athlete Development Center, designed by Koch Hazard.  

 

Rural Learning Center moves forward

Construction is slated to start in April on Phase II of the Maroney Rural Learning Center in Howard, SD. The two-story building is located on Main Street and includes conference, restaurant, hotel and fitness spaces. Photovoltaic panels, a green roof, a wind turbine and a geothermal well field are integrated in the design with a goal of achieving LEED Platinum certification.

 

 

$9.9 million bond approved for Hills-Beaver Creek High School

Voters in the Hills-Beaver Creek school approved the $9.9 million project with 70.7% in favor of passing the bond. Construction on the proposed 76,765 square foot new middle/high school could begin as early as June 1.

 

Addition complete on Our Savior's Lutheran Church

Construction is now complete on the 70,000 square foot addition, designed by Koch Hazard, to the existing Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Festivities are planned for Friday, Feb 26 through Sunday, Feb 28 with a formal dedication ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.

KH to design addition/renovation projects at NSU

The State of South Dakota Board of Regents have selected Koch Hazard to design the Student Center addition and renovation project as well as Lincoln/Graham Halls addition and renovation projects at Northern State University. Both projects are anticipated to be ready for students by the start of the Fall 2011 semester.

 

Koch Hazard sponsors Children's Inn event

Media One FunSki, an annual benefit for Children's Inn, was held January 29-30 at Great Bear Ski Valley. Koch Hazard sponsored the event and also participated in the Snow Sculpture and Snow Tube events.

Museum receives 2009 Mayoral Award for Historic Preservation

The Museum of Visual Material was one of four recipients of the 2009 Mayoral Award for Preservation, awarded for the restoration and reuse of the former Consolidated Tank Line building at 500 North Main Avenue. The Mayoral
Awards for Historic Preservation are given annually to individuals,
organizations, and projects that demonstrate a strong commitment to historic preservation in Sioux Falls.


First Presbyterian Church in Miller, SD earns design award

First Presbyterian Church in Miller, SD won a Merit Award at the 2009 AIA South Dakota conference on October 15-16. This 6,500 square foot addition was completed in 2007 and features a new fellowship hall, kitchen, restrooms, coat room, and entry.

Ribbon cutting for USF Salsbury Science Center

A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Friday, October 2 to celebrate the
opening of the Joseph E. Salsbury Science Center. The facility underwent a
24,000 square foot renovation and 13,400 square foot addition, designed by
Koch Hazard. The ribbon cutting and reception will be held at 6:00 pm.


Third Street Lofts inches closer to reality

Investors are ready to move forward with the mixed use project. 140 one
and two bedroom apartments and 30,000 square feet of office/retail space
will be part of the first new project in the Uptown development.


New Fawick Park Canopy to host downtown events

The Parks and Recreation Department has engaged Koch Hazard to design a canopy structure and platform to accommodate expanding events at the downtown park.

 
 

Grand opening planned for Freeman Elementary

Freeman Elementary School will host a grand opening on Saturday, September 19 to showcase the new two-section addition, designed by Koch Hazard. The addition provides classrooms, computer labs, a library, music room, gymnasium, cafeteria/commons and support areas for preschool through 6th grade students.


Grand re-opening planned for Orpheum Theater

On September 17, the Orpheum Theater in Sioux Falls is planning a grand re-opening and open house ceremony to showcase the recently completed renovations. Events will include a Chamber Ribbon Cutting at 4:30 pm, facility tours, video retrospective, live music, and refreshments. This is a free event and open to the public, co-sponsored by Koch Hazard Architects.

Ribbon cutting set for Fire Station #5

A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Fire Station #5 at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 4 at 2010 E. Nye St. The new station was designed by Koch Hazard to improve response times in east central Sioux Falls.

Gloria Dei construction begins

Construction on the new 76,000 square foot Gloria Dei Lutheran Church will begin following a groundbreaking ceremony on September 27. The church is being built on 35 acres offering high visibility and easy access and parking less than two miles from the current building. The project is scheduled to be completed in October 2010.

Freeman Elementary School complete

Construction on Freeman Elementary School wrapped up in time for classes to begin on August 27. The two-section addition, designed by Koch Hazard, provides classrooms, computer labs, a library, music room, gymnasium, cafeteria/commons and support areas for preschool through 6th grade students.


Patrick Henry renovations nearly complete

Renovations to Patrick Henry Middle School are nearing completion. Remodeled areas include an enlarged cafeteria, kitchen upgrade, auditorium facelift, music room, technology education classrooms, and shop. Exterior improvements include a new mechanical addition, larger trash enclosure and an expanded bus line.

KH to design Brookings High School expansion

The Brookings School District Board of Education has selected Koch Hazard Architects to design the Brookings High School Phase III reconstruction project. Four design firms presented to the Board on June 30, 2009 for the approximately $7 million project, which is anticipated to begin construction in Spring 2010.

Sioux Falls Regional Airport groundbreaking

July 9, 2009 marked the groundbreaking for the Sioux Falls Regional Airport terminal expansion, designed by Koch Hazard. The project will expand the terminal by 23,000 square feet and be completed in approximately 18 months.
